Making work & family compatible: HABAU GROUP opens its “BauZwerge” crèche in Perg

Since September 2024, the “BaggerZwerge” (“digger dwarfs”) group has been in place for up to twelve children aged one to three. The second group, “KranZwerge” (“crane dwarfs”), is currently being planned. The day care is free – with ongoing registration possible.

Since September 2024, HABAU GROUP employees are able to leave their children between the ages of one to three with the “BauZwerge” day care group at the company headquarters in Perg (Upper Austria). Six children are currently attending the HABAU GROUP crèche – with many more to follow. The new facility is a further step taken by the local construction group to support the compatibility of work and family life and promote a family-friendly working environment. Yesterday, the “BauZwerge” crèche was officially inaugurated in an opening ceremony that included Michael Mayer-Schütz, CFO HABAU GROUP, Anton Froschauer, the mayor of Perg and Martin Hajart, the regional chairman of the Family Association and deputy mayor of Linz. The project is funded by the province of Upper Austria with a total of 275,000 euros.

With the launch of the crèche, the HABAU GROUP is enabling parents and guardians to carry out their work while their children are taken care of close by in a safe and encouraging environment. The “BauZwerge” (“construction dwarfs”) crèche – the name was chosen internally by HABAU GROUP employees – is designed for children from the ages of one to three and is led by an experienced team of teachers and caregivers. The sponsor is the Upper Austria Family Association, which has many years of experience in operating childcare facilities. But the day care programme is not only aimed at HABAU employees in Perg; HABAU GROUP employees from HELD & FRANCKE, MCE and Fuchs Transport Logistik are also welcome to bring their children to the “BauZwerge” crèche.

“The launch of the ‘BauZwerge’ crèche is an important milestone for our employees. With it, we want to not only make it easier to reconcile work and family life, but also take action to show our colleagues that we appreciate them”, explains Hubert Wetschnig, CEO of the HABAU GROUP. “Our employees do great things every day, and we want to provide them with a working environment that also takes their needs as parents into consideration.”

“As the Family Association and a full-service provider of corporate childcare, we’re very pleased to be able to support the HABAU GROUP in the planning all the way to the operation of the crèche. This offer creates massive added value for employees, for the company and for the region as a whole”, says Mag. Martin Hajart, regional chairman of the Upper Austria Family Association and deputy mayor of Linz.

The “BauZwerge” crèche: collaborations with other companies possible

The crèche was initiated by the personnel department of the HABAU GROUP as a way of supporting employees in making work and family life compatible. Alongside the high demand, the limited childcare options in the rural area and the large catchment area of the employees also played a decisive role in the creation of this offer. The planning and construction of the rooms for the “BauZwerge” was carried out by the team at HABAU Hochbau West in Perg. From planning to approval to start, the whole thing took just a few weeks – construction was completed without a hitch between March and August 2024 at the Group headquarters in Perg. This highlights the solidarity of Austria’s fourth biggest construction company when it comes to making work and family compatible.

In addition to the internal offers for its employees, the HABAU GROUP is also seeking to enter into cooperation with regional businesses in future to make the crèche offer available for parents with children from other companies in the region. By doing so, the idea is to provide targeted relief for working parents while also giving businesses in the region that are unable to offer their own in-house childcare the possibility to support their employees in reconciling work and family life, thus positioning themselves as attractive employers.

Mayor and Upper Austrian state parliament representative Anton Froschauer is also pleased with the new day care option for the region’s youngest inhabitants: “In Perg, we’ve been experiencing increasing demand for childcare facilities for years now. The new HABAU GROUP ‘BauZwerge’ crèche offers an invaluable addition here and takes a burden off many working parents in the region.” He adds: “It’s encouraging to see that regional companies like the HABAU GROUP are living up to their social responsibility and actively contributing towards solving local challenges. The planned collaborations with other businesses in the region represent an important step in the long-term expansion of childcare services.”

The HABAU GROUP “BauZwerge” crèche is open from Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 12:30 pm; this morning childcare session is free of charge. If needed, the childcare can be extended to include the afternoon for a fee.
